What is Yoga?

Yoga was born in India, more than 1,000 years ago and has changed and evolved over the years. For some people they know it is a trendy thing to do, for others they have been doing it for years and it’s a deep rooted practice, or even a religious practice. For some, yoga encompasses the 5 areas of fitness.

After seeing the same negative life patterns within myself and my clients for over two decades, I felt very inspired to design a formula that could remove the noise in our lives. This formula, my antidote, is called “The Porter Method“. This new methodology utilizes emotional release techniques, integrating physical movement with inner peace work. The variables of my formula require you to learn how to release your subconscious blocks, align with your authentic self, and give you the tools to reset and create a life by design.

Some Key Benefits of Yoga

Increases flexibility

The #1 reason I hear of why people don’t start yoga is because they aren’t flexible enough. Through practicing yoga, you will gradually increase your flexibility, regardless of your starting point. You have to start somewhere!

Builds Strength

For those that aren’t in a condition to do intense workouts, they can start with simple yoga and still work on building strength and endurance gradually. Endurance is achieved when holding poses, and transitioning from one pose to the next. Yoga is unique in that it not only builds strength and endurance, but also increases flexibility at the same time.

Corrects Alignment

When practiced correctly, yoga can retrain the memory of your muscle to better your posture and alignment. Creating this balance takes the tension/tightness out of the back, neck, and other muscles and joints. Yoga will help you become more aware of your posture throughout your daily activities, and encourage you to correct it when needed.

Improves Coordination

Yoga takes you through a series of poses and movements requiring you to move in a completely new and different way giving you an improved sense of body awareness. Improved coordination will help you move throughout your daily activities more smoothly and efficiently.

Heals Joints

Each time you practice yoga, you take your joints through their full range of motion. This can help prevent degenerative arthritis or mitigate disability by “squeezing and soaking” areas of cartilage that normally aren’t used. Joint cartilage is like a sponge; it receives fresh nutrients only when its fluid is squeezed out and a new supply can be soaked up. Without proper sustenance, neglected areas of cartilage can eventually wear out, exposing the underlying bone like worn-out brake pads.

Maintains Health of the Spine

the shock absorbers between the vertebrae that can herniate and compress nerves crave movement. Movement offers them their needed nutrients. If you’ve got a well-balanced asana practice with plenty of backbends, forward bends, and twists, you’ll help keep your disks supple.

Increases Bone Density

It is well documented that weight-bearing exercise strengthens bones and helps ward off osteoporosis. Many postures in yoga require that you lift your own weight. For those of you that don’t like to lift weights, this is a great way to work on building bone density.

Being Present

The art of being present is an ongoing practice, or at least it is for me and most of my students. I hear from my students that this is the hardest thing they deal with while practicing yoga. With all of the daily distractions we have in today’s society, it is difficult to be fully present from moment to moment in life. Whether it is being fully engaged in a conversation with your significant other, playing with your kids, listening to a friend, working on a project at work, or the simple pleasure enjoying mealtime! Continually working on mastering this one benefit of yoga can be life changing for you and those around you.

Correct Technique Makes All the Difference

When you incorporate different alignments principles, it helps to retrain the memory of the muscle to have better alignment and posture.
